IQ Assessment tests are being used as a selection tool for manager’s posts at a time of large redundancies though the Unions are up in arms over the use of such tests. After this government has built up another huge quango – the Learning & Skills Councils – who administer the Further Education and Training budget – it has now decided – rather later than many in the FE Sector would have liked, to get rid of around a third of staff. They are hoping to do this on a voluntary basis – and as staff don’t get the grades they apply for, this is an incentive for them to move. If this creates more money for lecturers in the FE colleges, it will be good news, but as cash-strapped colleges cut courses, this seems unlikely. But … the idea of IQ tests for managers is a good one in my opinion – many of us have felt annoyed when major organisations – including councils and the government – often seem to be run by people with only one brain cell. It would, at least, focus selector’s minds on having more intelligent folks in positions of power.
