I believe that some independent (and state) schools recommend a minimum number of hours sleep for their children –the TES says that this is about 18% and 9% respectively. A recent FDS international survey reported in the Times Educational Supplement said that around 40% of parents wanted their schools to recommend minimum hours of sleep and/or recommend bedtimes. Parents are also concerned that children are watching inappropriate shows before bedtime. The survey also found that children with TV in their bedrooms slept, on average, 30 minutes less than those without. (I bet that average hides some big discrepancies !) .

Now come on, parents ! Why are you so frightened about setting a reasonable bedtime for your children ? Do we believe by this that parents don’t know what time is a reasonable time ? Or that they would feel better if someone else could be blamed. “If it were just me, I’d let you stay up later, but your school says you have to be in bed by eight, so you’ll just have to go, or I’ll get into trouble”. However, what is supposedly good about this is that parents are concerned about the issue.
