Of all the research reports in education being studied by the NERF what seemed to surprise them most was the high level of young people who still have gender stereotyped vocational aspirations for future studies in further education. Of all the research reports in education being studied by the NERF what seemed to surprise them most was the high level of young people who still have gender stereotyped vocational aspirations for future studies in further education. A recent EO commission report based on original and recent research has found the UK workforce very highly segregated. Men make up only 2% of the childcare workforce; 1% of construction workers are female and only 22 girls in the whole of England enrolled in plumbing apprenticeships in 2003/04. Women are still mainly working in lower paid areas – what the EOC calls the 5Cs: cleaning, catering, caring cashiering and clerical work. Previous studies have found the need for high quality careers education and guidance before KS4 – but really, it is up to parents to support children and young people to have high aspirations from when they are little, by supporting them at school and making sure they have a wide range of experience and information before making up their minds of what to study or which jobs to do. I’m sure that you think that cleaning and caring are important jobs to be done by somebody – though you might be disappointed if you daughter’s talents are to be rewarded so poorly. |
